Day One – Body Ministry

“If they were all one part, where would the body be?” 1 Corinthians 12:19

Today’s Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

A few years ago I participated in a massive performance as a member of a 300-voice, multi-state choir. Although I’ve been a choir director for years, I joined in order to experience the leadership of a master conductor. I was not disappointed. The director really knew his stuff.

The choir was only one part of the performance. Other segments included a vocal ensemble, a brass band, youth and kids’ dance and choreography, and a forty-five-minute drama—enough action to fill an entire evening of entertainment.

For more than half a year, we practiced one entire day a month, each section of the performance practicing in various areas of the building. I was relegated to the alto section, oblivious to anything else going on. Then, three months before the performance, everyone was directed to the gymnasium where, for the first time, the different parts and segments came together. I was pulled out of my alto world and moved into huger space of variety and harmony and talent. It was incredible.

My little spot at the top of the risers gave me a magnificent view of everyone and everything going on at the same time. I couldn’t help but think that that’s how God intends the body of Christ to function—we get out of our separate little worlds and connect with each other, creating a beautiful montage of gifted people.

Our director gave specific instructions to all the participants, and I’d like to weave those instructions into this week’s quest. You may see a direct correlation with the question, “If they were all one part, where would the body be?” Hopefully we will all be inspired to come out of our little corners and create a bigger picture of the body of Christ for the world to see.

  • How connected are you to other members of the body of Christ?
  • When will you leave your little corner of the world and connect?
